I joined EditAvenue as an editor. After passing their initial test assignment with an Excellent rating, I had an inquiry from a potential client as to whether I could help supplement their book with additional materials. I had too little information to give a reply. Editors are not permitted to communicate directly with clients, and I could find no way on the EditAvenue site for a client to submit a document to me without committing to paying for editing work. I could have accepted the work sight unseen and bulled my way through somehow, but only at great cost to the client for work that may have been ill advised anyway. So I wrote to EditAvenue asking if it was all right to view a sample of the project before committing to it. I had no response from EditAvenue, so I felt I could not accept the project.

A couple of weeks later on a Monday morning there was a notification in my email that an editing project had been submitted by a client. The notification had arrived at 8:24 the previous night. Also in my inbox was a separate message received 7:27 am Monday morning, just after I had started work: a Transaction Warning saying, in part: "Either you have not started your project within a reasonable time period or your project is late." I don't normally work after 7 pm or so on Sunday nights, so I had missed the initial notification. I immediately downloaded the project from my EditAvenue account and started work. As I was working, I received a second transaction warning. I replied to it, stating when I had received notification of the project, and that I was currently working on it. No response, except another transaction warning. I finished my work and submitted it an hour before its deadline. Shortly after that I received a notice that my account had been deactivated: "We have deactivated your account because you did not start your project within a reasonable time period, because the project is late, or because you violated your contractual obligations. All current projects have been transferred to other service providers." None of that was true, so I asked them politely to reinstate my account, repeating the particulars of the incident and referring them to my previous message. They reactivated my account, notifying me as follows: "Your account has been reactivated. Please do not violate your contractual obligations in the future."

I wanted to ensure for the record that I would not be perceived as a contract violator, so I thanked them for reactivating the account and cited the relevant parts of the contract and restated how I had not violated them.

About half an hour later, EditAvenue deactivated my account again, apparently permanently: "I'm sorry but we are not interested in promoting your services. Your account has been deactivated and your credit card payment has been refunded. Your credit card company will process the refund within 5 days."

I'm not sure how I could have fulfilled the obligation that states "If you are selected for an editing transaction you should pickup [sic] the document immediately". What if an editor is notified at 3 am (or 8:24 pm on a Sunday night)? It also says you are to check your email once a day. What if I check it at 9 am and I'm notified of a project at 10 am? As it happens, I keep my email on all day and am warned when every message arrives, but I only work between 7:30 am and 8 pm (a reasonable length of time), so how can I immediately respond to mail received late at night?
