Charles Messier (June 26, 1730 - April 12, 1817) The Hotel de Cluny in Paris where Messier observed as it appeared in his day. The tower just to the right of center was his observatory and had a glass structure atop it. The tower at Hotel de Cluny stands today, minus the glass structure at the top.
